Cu aproape 88.000 de angajati full-time si part-time in intreaga lume, American Airlines (AA) este cea mai mare companie aeriana din lume in ceea ce priveste numarul de pasageri si flota, si a doua, dupa Air France/KLM, ca venituri.

In dimineata zilei de 15 aprilie 1926, un tanar aviator, Charles Lindbergh, a zburat pe un DH-4 efectuand o livrare postala pe numele Aircraft Corporation Robertson din Missouri, de la Chicago la St Louis. Acest zbor este considerat ca fiind primul zbor programat a ceea ce mai tarziu a devenit American Airlines. In fapt, nu era nimic "regulat", pentru ca a fost doar o experienta, dar este promovat ca un precedent istoric si folosit de companie pentru publicitate.

Initial, in 1930, American Airlines se numea American Airways Inc. Acesta din urma a fost rezultatul fuziunii dintre Aviation Corporation cu filialele sale si Robertson Aircraft Corporation din Missouri. In 1934, compania s-a confruntat cu dificultati economice grave si, cumparata de Errett cablu Lobban, a luat numele actual - American Airlines.

In acelasi an, pe 13 mai, Cyrus Rowlett Smith a fost numit CEO al companiei aeriene, o pozitie pe care a detinut-o pana in 1968, cu exceptia celui de-al Doilea Razboi Mondial. La 25 iunie 1936, American Airlines este prima companie aeriana care introduce aparatul Douglas DC-35. Pe 10 iunie 1939, American Airlines intra pe bursa din New York .

In timpul celui de-al Doilea Razboi Mondial, jumatate din flota Douglas DC-3 a American Airlines este inchiriata de armata SUA. In 1941, American Airlines lanseaza zborul New York - Toronto. Pe 20 iulie 2011, compania a anuntat o comanda record de 460 de avioane, 260 Airbus A320 si Boeing 737pentru reinnoirea flotei, care vor incepe sa opereze din 2013.

Doua dintre avioanele implicate in atacurile de la 11 septembrie 2001 au apartinut companiei. Pierderile au inceput sa apara treptat dupa aceasta tragedie, iar la sfarsitul lunii noiembrie 2011 intra in faliment, in prezent compania aflandu-se in reorganizarea activitatii.

Sediul companiei este in Texas, la Fort Worth. Opereaza zboruri interne si internationale pe patru continente si are hub-uri in Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), Los Angeles (LAX), New York/JFK (JFK), Miami (MIA) si Chicago O'Hare (ORD).

Ea deserveste impreuna cu partenerii sai American Eagle Airlines si American Connexion peste 250 de orase din 40 de tari si teritorii, cu peste 3.400 de zboruri zilnice.

American Airlines nu are zboruri directe din Romania.

American Airlines opereaza cu 612 aeronave.Varsta medie a flotei este de 14,7 ani. Compania opereaza urmatoarele tipuri de avioane: Boeing 777, Boeing 767, Boeing 757, Boeing 757, Boeing MD-80, ATR 72 - Super ATR, CRJ-700, ERJ-135 - ERJ-140 - ERJ-145.
